Gilhoi Obituary, November 27, 2002

Robert George Gilhoi, 62 - June 5, 1940 - Nov. 27, 2002
Robert George Gilhoi was born June 5, 1940 in Montevideo, Minn., the
youngest of three sons of Arthur and Georgia (Moe) Gilhoi.
He was raised in Stewart, Minn., where he was very involved in sports,
music and Scouting. For four years Bob spent his summers as a counselor
at Many Point Scout Camp in Ponsford, Minn. In 1958 he graduated from
Granite Falls High School, then attended St. Olaf College from
1958-1960. In 1960 he enrolled at the University of Minnesota. After two
years of studying and singing with his brother Dale in the folk duo "The
Lean Two," he graduated in 1962 with a degree in speech and psychology.
Following two years of service in the Army, he returned to the Twin
Cities and worked at Minneapolis Rehabilitation Center. He soon met Sue
and they were married on Nov. 5, 1966 in Minneapolis. They started their
family and were blessed with two sons, Jay and Chad. Later Bob was
employed by Elkins Institute and Professional Economic Bureau.
In 1977 Bob and his family moved to Luck, where he bought Paulson's Dry
Goods Store and a home on Big Butternut Lake. He ran Gilhoi's Department
Store from 1977 to 1995, founding Luck Travel in 1985. Bob was an active
member of the Luck community, serving several terms as Commercial Club
president and as a member of the Pioneer Home Board, Luck Planning
Commission, and Luck Park Board. At Luck Lutheran Church, he served two
terms on the church council and anchored the bass section of the choir
for 25 years.
After selling the department store and travel business, Bob took over as
president of Luck Travel's parent company, Travel Now, Inc. in New
Richmond, where he was enjoying work until cancer struck in November 2002.
Bob was a competitor who enjoyed playing golf, cards and a myriad of
other games. He was a true Vikings, Twins and Gophers fan who followed
the teams devotedly. He was often happiest in the summer jumping in the
lake after work and relaxing on his deck or pontoon boat with family and
friends. He had a passion for travel that took him and Sue (along with
dozens of their closest friends) to exotic destinations across the globe
and to fine restaurants that allowed him to pursue his love of gourmet food.
Bob will always be remembered for his sense of humor, love of music, and
love of life. He was a loving husband and father who cherished time
spent with his family. He passed away Nov. 27, at his home in Luck. Bob
is survived by his wife Susan; son Jay (Jennifer), son Chad (Jennifer);
granddaughter Amy; and another grandchild on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Russell and Dale.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 2 at Luck Lutheran Church with
Rev. Mark Hall and Rev. Sally Ankerfelt officiating. Music was provided
by the church choir and friends of the family.
Pallbearers were Allen Ormson, Charles McBrayer, Anthony Johnson,
Richard Kallio, Glenn Mahler, Bruce Hendry, William Anderson. Honorary
bearers were Kim Gorres, Kathy Berends, Cindy Conrad, Marilyn Beneson,
Janet Pearson, Tracy Wirth and Renee Neumann.
The Rowe Funeral Home in Luck assisted the family with arrangements.
