Question about Danish catfood
Fra : Tristán White

Dato : 13-09-06 19:04

Apologies for writing in English, I do not speak any Danish.

I am currently writing a screenplay based in Denmark, and I need to know
the name of catfoods in Denmark. Danish ones (ie not IAMS, Whiskas, etc,
which I know are also available in Denmark).

Also, what is the generic word "catfood" in Danish?

And finally, would the German catfood Schnucki be well known or available
in Denmark?

Sorry for these very strange questions; I have been to Denmark but I forgot
to check these things out!

All the best

Tristán White

I think the group "dk.fritid.dyr.kat" can help a bit more
Catfood = kattemad

Good luck!

SORRY!

I blame my sore throat, fever and red nose for not being a bit more awake!

Good luck, though

Here is a link to a Danish consumers magazine:

http://www.taenk.dk/index.php?sid=2&cid=3666

A to N is dry food
1 to 13 is wet food

Not mentioned on the list is Olivers petfood which is rather popular
in Denmark.

The German catfood Schnucki is available. It is very cheap but i'm
afraid it has a bad reputation. It has a very high content of
magnesia, which is considered to be extremely harmful to castrates.

Kindest regards

Tove :)

Thank you Tove, that is very useful.

Schnucki is not listed in 1 to 13, so I guess they don't make one?

Thanks again!!

It is possible to get Schnucki in Denmark, I'm rather sure that Aldi sells
it. It is not a particular well known brand in Denmark as it is only sold in
this one supermarketchain, to the best of my knowledge.

Other brands of Catfoods is Landlord (sold in Rema1000), Catty (sold in Coop
shops), Sille (sold in Fakta shops), AS (sold in Schlecker shops) and of
course brands as Royal Canin, Whiskat, Pussi (also known as Felix in other
countries) and several other brands.

Hope this is answer to your questions, otherwise - write again :)

Thank you! Schnucki do wet food as well, don't they?

despite my cats occationally gets it :)

Kind regards

My cats hate Felix wetfood. They only really like Whiskas Supermeat (any
flavour - the only jelly Whiskas ones they touch are the fishy ones). And
they won't touch the gravy ones.

I'm desperately trying to vary their diet with different makes and
flavours, so that they have a more interesting meal, but it's hard.

Hi Tristan.
My lovely Persian had only ever had Hill's dry catfood (both plain and
anti-hairball), and apparently had rejected any other food along the
lines of 'what cats usually like'. I tried several types of well known
'cat candy', goodies and treats, but she barely looked at it, clearly
thinking 'What's that - it can't be food - not interesting at all
(ho-hum)'.
But due to some digestion probs she had I tried Royal Canin for Persian
Cats, among other brands (Oliver's, too, but actually they import some
of the meat all the way from New Zealand, which I find silly as well as
environmentally irresponsible), and this one (RC Persian 30) she liked!
In fact it's a bit like a classic commercial.... She even eats it out of
my hand I don't think you mentioned which type of cat you've
got, and perhaps you've tried RC already - but if not, e-mail them (from
the homepage) and ask for test bags, I got two quite large bags and one
of them (the breed specific one) is an absolute hit! Worth a try....
Apparently cats aren't all that into variation and don't find it
interesting (as humans do), as they are creatures of habit and territory
- according to the half-a-ton of books on cats I read before Gia, my
cat, moved in. So perhaps you needn't worry about varying their meals as
much as getting them the right nutrition - that they want to eat, of
course. Gia eats Hill's, but she much prefers RC Persian. Much!
If you know what they really like, and it's healthy (apparently
Schnuckis isn't that good for cats), don't worry about variation. Much
better use the time playing with them than hunting around for different
types of catfood
Med venlig hilsen (yours sincerely)

Thanks Siri for the thoughtful and interesting reply!!

My two cats are two ginger boys - both rescued from the cathome about 3
years ago. One is extremely friendly, the other is still terrified of its
own shadow (but occasionally, once a week, will be approachable for a rub).

The previous owner, according to Celia Hammond (where we got the cat from -
she's a model from London in the 60s, who now spends her life rehousing
cats), was brutally attacked in her home by her abusive partner, and
hospitalised. She had to be moved into a refuge for battered women and her
mother wouldn't look after the cats on her behalf (how sad and insensitive)
and since the refuge wouldn't take pets, the mother signed them over to the
cathome and we got them.

Our big ginger boy fitted in perfectly and is extremely friendly, but as I
said the thin younger one runs away as soon as you move, even after three
years of showing love and care for it. I have to get the 3-month flea drops
for him instead of the 1-month flea drops, as I'm unlikely to get close
enough to administer the drops more than once every couple of months!

I sometimes wonder whether the younger one is slightly schizophrenic (can
cats be schizophrenic?) as for a day or so, every couple of months as I
said, he'll be friendly and approachable as well.
