Iran`sformer envoy blames al-Qaeda for Hariri`s assassination
Tehran, Feb 20, IRNA -- Iran`s former ambassador to Syria Ali-Akbar
Mohtashamipour here on Sunday condemned assassination of Rafik Hariri,
Lebanon`s former prime minister, saying that Al-Qaeda had carried out
the terrorist move on an order by the US.
"Those committing the terrorist act had the dream of Syrian
troops` pullout from Lebanon and of disarmament of Hizbollah forces,"
Mohtashamipour, a member of central council of the Association of
Combatant Clergymen (MRM: Majma`-e Rouhaniyoune Mobarez), in an
interview with IRNA.
Justifying his claim, Mohtashamipour said when he was a prime
minister, late Hariri used to have close links and good ties with
Syria and the ties got more sincere and closer with the country and
its allies even after a change in Lebanon`s premiership post and
formation of a new government by his successor Omar Karami.
He said the ties bogged the US.
Mohtashamipour switched to the Hariri`s assassination, saying the
immediate objective of al-Qaeda for the assassination has been to turn
banon non-tranquil because tension in the country benefits the US and
Israel the most.
The second goal behind the assassination has been to fan
ethnic conflict and civil war in Lebanon, said Mohtashamipour, adding
the war would not be in favor of Syria and Lebanese government and
parties, rather, that of the US and Israel.
Iran`s former MP said civil war in Lebanon would misportray
presence of Syrian troops in Lebanon because the forces are there to
guarantee security and their presence had been approved and conformed
in the Taif conference as well.
Since Syrian troops` deployment in Lebanon, civil wars have
subsided and calm restored, said Mohtashamipour, adding that
naturally insecurity in Lebanon would disfavor Syria, being to the
interest of the US.
He predicted that as a result of Hariri`s assassination Syria
would be under mounting international pressure, including by Arab
states, and more warning would be issued for withdrawal of Syrians
from Lebanon.
The Iranian diplomat said another goal behind the killing of
Hariri has been disarmament of the Islamic resistance forces in
Lebanon.
Lebanese Islamic resistance forced Israeli occupying forces
retreat from Southern Lebanon without giving them any concessions,
said Mohtashamipour.
"This was a big success for the Lebanese Hizbollah," boasted
Mohtashamipour, adding that today, Lebanese president, government, all
parties, even Katayib party and phalanges, are among the staunch
supporters of Hizbollah, willing to see Islamic Resistance forces
continue to guarantee security in southern Lebanon.
He said presence of Hizbollah forces in southern Lebanon is of
"high significance" considering occupation of Shaaba farms by Israel.
He added that the US has since long years ago been trying to
disarm Hizbollah and push Islamic resistance forces out of southern
Lebanon at least.
He stressed that now the US plot for Hariri`s assassination by
al-Qaeda is in line with the same goals.
All the evidences prove that it has not been to the interest of
any group in Lebanon or even Arab states to assassinate Hariri, said
Mohtashamipour.
The former diplomat said those, being behind the assassination,
have been following the same objectives they had in Afghanistan and
Iraq and in those countries too al-Qaeda served as a tool for the US.
