The F-801’s specification remains impressive today, including; Programmed
exposure modes for high speed, normal or dual operation, Aperture and
Shutter Priority, full manual control, a built-in motordrive (up to 3.3fps),
multiple exposure, auto-focus and a very bright focusing screen. But the
limelight was taken by two new features; Matrix metering and Matrix Balanced
Fill Flash. Despite being a Nikon name, Matrix metering has become a generic
term for all forms of multi-pattern measurement – a testament to its
success. Using the Matrix reading, TTL flash control was provided, allowing
flash and ambient light to be adjusted in relation to each other. For the
first time many photographers were able to rely on computerised flash
control to balance the flash-to-daylight ratio. Today’s cameras are better,
but the F-801 still does well, especially if confined to negative film.
