*Biography*
The three members of Outlandish started their friendship and musical
companionship as teenagers in 1991 in Copenhagen suburb Brøndby Strand
in Denmark. Isam Bachiri's parents were immigrants from Morocco; Lenny
Martinez was born in Honduras before his family emigrated to Cuba and
then to Denmark; Waqas Qadri was born in Denmark by Pakistani parents.
As young teenagers in Denmark, they were inspired by the American
hip-hop movement, spending much of their time practising breakdance.
Soon, though, their interests shifted more towards the musical side.
The trio became first became known as "Young, Gifted and Brown", but
in 1997 they decided to change their name to Outlandish [meaning
strange, exotic] after stumbling across the word in a dictionary.
It was in December of 1997 that Outlandish were introduced to the
public through charity single "Pacific to Pacific", soon followed by
single "Saturday Night". The relative success of these tracks gave the
group the chance to work on an album. The process of preparing the
album brought the group members' ethnic origins more and more into
attention, resulting in new inspiration for a highly multi-ethnic
first album, Outland's Official.
The album was a success. It spun hit singles "Walou", "Wherever",
"Come On" and "Stick 'Em Up", it was praised by music critics and was
nominated for six Danish Music Awards, winning the award for hip-hop
album of the year.
In 2002, Outlandish returned with new ambitions with album Bread &
Barrels of Water, preceded by hit single "Guantanamo". Again, the
album was hugely critically acclaimed and achieved instant commercial
success in Denmark. In addition, the group's ambitions of making it
internationally are being pursued, the album being released in the
rest of Europe as well.
