ABB vindmøller

Lover ikke godt for Vestas og Micons gamle møller:

We missed out ABB Group, traded mainly out of Zurich under ABBN.ZUR. This
very large company has developed revolutionary new wind power technology
where the windmill works without gears and is therefore also much quieter.
The tips of the blades are magnetized and so is a surrounding ring, and thus
the windmill itself is the generator. Greater efficiency too at low wind
speeds. The windmills can also be smaller. The principle was first developed
for use in industrial and domestic fans, where the function is simply
reversed. ABB is also "perfecting" efficient transmission systems from the
windmill, which cheapens the process of converting power into DC for
transmission and then back into AC. In other words, the entire system has to
be efficient, not just the generating part. This question of total system
efficiency escapes most producers who dabble in particular aspects of
renewable energy production.

startet her i sommer med vedvarende energi....

The Windformer system is most suitable for wind farms with a rating of 15 MW
or more where each wind turbine has an output of about 3 MW. This large
turbine power rating has a number of advantages. For example, it reduces the
required site area since fewer machines are needed for a given station
output. This in turn diminishes the visual impact and noise emissions from
the wind turbines.
Windformer is based on the cable technology originally developed for ABB's
high voltage generator PowerformerTM. This technology makes it possible to
leave out components that are normally found in conventional wind power
systems. The result is a wind turbine without gearbox and transformer. The
stator of the Windformer generator is cable wound and has a variable speed
rotor with permanent magnets which is connected directly to the turbine. The
voltage (over 20 kV) produced by the generator is converted to DC by means
of diodes. The wind turbines are connected in groups and the power is
transmitted by HVDC cables to an inverter station, connected to the high
voltage grid.

A 500-kilowatt (kW) prototype generator has been built and is now being
tested. The first unit of 3 MW has been ordered by Vattenfall, the Nordic
Energy Group. The turbine will be installed at Näsudden, on the island
Gotland in Sweden. The plant is expected to go into operation by the end of
2001.

Wind power is fully renewable and the fastest growing source of electricity
production in the world. Continuing to exceed all forecasts, installed
capacity has grown from practically nothing in 1990 to about 13.4 gigawatts
(GW) today, and it is estimated that the installation rate could reach 10 GW
per year by 2005. The growth potential for wind power is considerable. Much
of the wind power generating capacity will be placed offshore where high
mean wind speeds translate into higher energy production.

ABB has been a leading supplier to the wind power industry for twenty years.
Currently, ABB has more than 25 percent of the market for wind turbine
generators, with more than 7 000 generators in operation in Sweden, Denmark,
the Netherlands, Germany and many other countries.

ABB - Asea Brown Boveri

Although they have not yet launched their American
shares, this Swiss-Swedish company is extremely interesting for a number of
reasons. Generally speaking, it is known as the "European GE" because of
it's diversity of biz lines, many of which are similar to GE's.

It is of interest to investors in electric utilties because of their
experience in infrastructure refurbishing and development. (They build
power lines and rebuild distribution systems.) They are also involved in
some cutting edge fields, including power chips (see
http://boards.fool.com/Message.asp?mid=13584732 ) and renewable energy
(see http://boards.fool.com/Message.asp?mid=14337311 ). Furthermore, their
newest CEO comes from the information technology side of the company, and
is expected to do bold things in this direction.

Moreover, they are truly a global company. See http://www.abb.com/

I expect that many Fools would greatly appreciate having a place to share
information and discuss developments about this company. And you can rest
assured that eventually they will be launching a US stock.

Thanks for the attention to this request.

Cheers!

Et linkt til et java-baseret røntgen-view af en vindmølle findes på
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/02/22/technology/22HOWW.html

Tryk under billedet af den gennemsigtige vindmølle.

Når man peger på de forskellige dele, kommer en forklaring. Ret fikst.
