All versions were tested with 64 MB RAM and
a Number 9 video card.
Disk space
Refer to your installation screen for the
minimum disk space requirements.
Printers - PostScript® and PCL5 printers.
4 megabytes or more are recommended for
PCL5 printers. PCL5 color printers are
supported; however, do not toggle on color
for a PCL5 printer that does not support
color. The resulting printed document may
be incorrect.
Display devices - All X server devices with
fewer than 4 planes display in monochrome.
All 4-plane or greater X server devices
(256 colors) display in color. You may
query the X server to find the number of
current bit planes by entering the xdpyinfo
command and looking at the depth
parameter. By default, Applixware requires
a minimum of 256 colors. 24-plane devices
are also supported, but Applixware uses the
default visual of all X servers.

Before You Install
The following list describes important
issues that you should be aware of before
you install Applixware 5.0, especially if
you have a previous version of Applixware
installed.
· The online help system and the Make It
Happen Guide document the Applixware
Office Classic interface as opposed to
the Applixware Office Redmond interface.
· If you are also running as an NIS client,
you will not be able to start Applixware
unless you exist in the /etc/passwd file.
· You will not be able to use your
Applixware 5.x menu bars in Applixware
4.42 or earlier.
· If you have customized your filters.sp
file or made copies to user or site-
specific directories, make sure they are
backed up before installing Applixware
5.0. Otherwise, errors may occur when
you export files. The current file is in
axdata/lang and should contain:
WP:Applix Words
3.x:filter_wp_to_wp311@:200:aw near the
top. If the 200 and/or the aw are
missing, the file is out of date.
Contact your system administrator to
obtain a copy of the 5.0 version of the
file.
· Applixware 5.x charts are automatically
reformatted when opened in Applixware
4.x.
· Opening an Applixware 3.2 chart in
Applixware 5.x does not maintain the
position of chart annotations (arrows,
text, objects, etc.). Charts created in
4.x open in 5.x with new margins, moving
the chart slightly. Annotations are not
tied to the chart, they just exist in the
Graphics space, so when the chart moves
beneath them they just stay where they

· Multi-plane ranges and range names are
lost when exporting from Applixware 5.x
to Applixware 4.x. (17920)
Installing Applixware
1. su root
2. Mount your CD-ROM drive. Most versions of
Linux use the following syntax:

To use the RPM-based installation,
replace step 4 with the following
command:
./install.bsh
Year 2000 Compliance
To the best of our knowledge, all Year 2000
bugs have been fixed in Applixware and
Anyware versions 4.4 (1021.1.188), 4.42
(1021.202), and 5.0 (). Note, however,
version 4.37 and earlier releases are not
Y2K compliant. For information regarding
specific Y2K issues, please see the Applix
Web site at
www.applix.com.
We in the Applixware/Anyware Business Unit
are very aware of industry concerns with
potential problems many software
applications face with the upcoming turn of
the century - the "Year 2000/Y2K" issue.
We share these concerns.
The Applixware & Anyware (A/A) product
lines have been architected using 4
character years and/or 32-bit integer
internal representation of dates, to
generally avoid this type of problem. In
all known cases today where the products do
allow dates to be entered in a 2-digit
format, they are automatically converted to
a full 4-digit date for storage and
calculation purposes.
The A/A product lines have been code-
reviewed & tested for potential YR 2K
related issues. All problems found during
this effort have been corrected in the
context of the current, 5.0, product
release (please see "What did Applix do?"
section below for more detailed
information). If any potential YR 2K
issues in Applixware/Anyware make
themselves apparent during customer testing
or use, please report these issues to
Applix Support as soon as possible. Every
effort will be made to respond as quickly
as possible to any YR 2K problems that may
arise.
What does YR 2K compliance mean at Applix?
Year 2000 compliance requires six main
factors to be satisfied with respect to
date processing:
1.Correctly handle date information before,
during, and after 1st January 2000 -
accepting date input, providing date
output, and performing calculation on
dates or portions of dates. Date
manipulation in A/A will be accurate into
the future, until at least the year 2037.
2. Function according to the documentation
before, during and after 1st January 2000
without changes in operation resulting
from the advent of the new century,
assuming correct underlying system
configuration.
3. Where appropriate, respond to two digit
date input in a way that resolves the
ambiguity as to century in a disclosed,
defined, and pre-determined manner.
4. Store and provide output of date
information in ways that are unambiguous
as to century.
5. Manage the leap year occurring in the
year 2000, following the quad-centennial
rule.
6. "99" or "00" may not be interpreted as no
year...a "dummy" date. These potential
"dummy" dates must be handled as if they
were simple two digit year
representations.
What did Applix do?
Applix's YR 2K effort used a three pronged,
parallel strategy. The Applix Development
group code reviewed all known date handling
portions of the Applixware/Anyware
products, Applix QA independently tested
date handling features of the products in a
number of scenarios, & Applix Development
contacted various closely releated third
party developers for their YR2K statements
& product strategies.
As of the writing of this white paper, all
known YR 2K related problems in the
Applixware/Anyware product lines have been
rectified.
What should customers do?
All customers currently under a maintenance
& support agreement with Applix should
begin testing Applixware/Anyware 5.0 or
later ASAP in their YR 2K test environment.
It is important that testing only be
conducted with YR 2K compliant versions of
each of the relevant platform's operating
systems. A/A 5.0 will not ship
simulataneosly on all supported platforms,
and thus please check with your Applix
representative or Applix Support regarding
the availability of your particular
platform.
Any potential YR 2K issues that are found
with Applixware/Anyware 5.0 or later should
be reported to Applix Support ASAP. Applix
Support can be reached at the following
email, support@applix.com, or at the
appropriate local support offices (see
www.applix.com for more contact
information).
Any customer built custom Builder or ELF
based applications should be reviewed for
date handling as well.
5.0 Enhancements and Changes
The following enhancements and changes have
been incorporated in to Applixware 5.0.
Euro Currency Support
Applixware 5.0 includes support for the
Euro symbol. See the Chapter 1 of the
System Administrator's Guide for details.
Mute/Dead Keys
You can now generate accented characters
using any dead or mute keys on your
keyboard. See Chapter 8 of the System
Administrator's Guide for details.
Document and File Encryption
You now have the option of encrypting
documents and files in Applixware prior to
saving them to disk. See the Applixware
Preferences help.
Microsoft Office 2000 Support
Applixware 5.0 includes support for files
created within Microsoft Office 2000.
Ingres Support
Applixware 5.0 does not support the Ingres
database system.
Words, HTML Author, Macro Editor
· Applix Equation insets are now inserted
as non-pictures into Words (4447363)
· The Smart Space option now permits you to
add two spaces after the following
punctuation marks:

Rendezvous, Bloomberg, and TIBCO.
· A Rendezvous Real Time gateway for Linux,
Solaris, and NT has been added.
· User can select a grid line color from
Spreadsheets Preferences.
Filters
The following lists document limitations
and known issues with the Applixware 5.0
filters.
Limitations with new MS Word 97/2000 import filters in
5.0
1.Unknown objects that are lost, like MS
Project objects and VISIO drawing
objects, appear as Unhandled OLE Object
(or the actual object type).
2.Bar tabs lose bar. Applixware converts
bar tabs into left tabs.
3.Font character attribute Animation not
supported.
4.Vertical rules are not supported between
columns.
5.Merged cells that span rows are not
supported.
6.Page borders are not supported.
7.Character styles are not supported in
Applixware.
8.Emboss and Engrave character settings
convert to light gray in Applixware.
9.Shading fills less than 10% may display
white. Shading fills at 80% or higher
may display black on 8-bit color
monitors.
10. Sequential numbered series fields
can be labeled Equation, Table and
Figure. Custom labels may show as default
numbered series.
11. Highlighting is not supported.
Limitations with Excel 4.0, 5.0, 7.0, and 97/2000
Filters
1. Applixware imports only worksheets from
Excel 3.0 and 4.0. To import workbooks:
Save each worksheet to a separate file
and import each separately.
OR
Open a workbook in Excel 5.0, save it as
an Excel 5.0 file and import it into
Applixware 4.0.
2. Workbooks from Excel 5.0 and later are
supported. Worksheets have .xls or .xl4
sufffixes. Workbooks have .xlw suffixes.
Charts have .xlc suffixes. macros have
.xlm suffixes. (8197)
3. External references will be imported as
Labels preceded by the string "Problem in
Formula...".
4. Functions not supported by Applixware
will be imported as Labels preceded by
the string "Problem in Formula...".
Note: If there are external references or
functions not supported by Applixware the
user will be prompted to choose one of
the following:
Import the value only (the formula is
lost).
OR
Insert the formula.
If the latter is chosen, the user has the
opportunity to insert the formula or
value in the problem cells after
importing.
5.Applixware handles invalid range names as
follows:
If the range name is less than three
characters or if the first three
characters are not alphabetic, three
leading underscores will be added to the
range name. For example a1 will be
renamed to ___A1.
Invalid characters in the Range name will
be replaced with the letter 'q'. For
example A1&name will be renamed to
A1qname.
6.Applixware does not retain any name or
label in Excel that refers to an
expression. The expression will be
substituted for each name or label.
Note: If either situation described in
items 5 or 6 above occurs, an error
message will appear reporting the type of
problem and the how the import filter
handled it.
7.Special characters used in Excel will be
imported unless two different fonts exist
within the same cell.
8.Colors/borders/patterns (shading) are
imported as closely as possible, however
there is no one-to-one mapping. Please
notify us if you notice imported colors,
borders or patterns that could have been
matched better.
9. Importing Date Formats is supported, but
there is no one-to-one mapping. Please
notify us if you observe date formats
which are not imported correctly.
10. NOTES (comments) associated with
cells in Excel are not imported. See bug
81869.
We export Applixware strings that exceed
256 characters into Excel's Notes (or
"Comments" in Excel 97/2000).
11. Array and Table Formulae are new
additions to the filters.
12. Row and Col formats are imported and
exported.
13. Headers and Footers are imported and
exported.
14. Title Rows and Cols are imported
(only those that are adjacent and only as
many as 10).
15. There are two types of Excel titles:
Title panes (set under Window Freeze
pane) that are only displayed.
(titles.xl5)
Print titles (set under Page Setup -
Sheet) that are printed on each sheet by
Excel. (titles2.xl5)
Applixware imports Excel's title panes
which both display and print in
Applixware. Applixware ignores Excels
print titles.
16. Orientation and margins are imported
and exported (for printing).
17. Page breaks are imported and
exported.
18. Excel Macros and Visual basic
procedures are ignored. (10317)
19. Charts are imported from Excel 4.0,
5.0, and later.
20. Charts are not exported, they are
ignored. Bug 92746. See output a comment
for 4.41.
21. Multiplanes (introduced in Excel
5.0) are imported and exported.
22. Pivot tables are not supported in
Applixware. The last saved data in Excel
pivot tables is imported.
23. Hidden cells are not supported.
Excel hides the cell formulas but
displays the cell results (enabled after
protecting the sheet). Applixware hides
both the cell formula and result for
entire rows and/or columns. (Lotus hides
the cell result but displays the cell
formula). Applixware imports Excel hidden
cells as normal cells and ignores the
hidden attribute. Applixware has
invisible cells which show the contents
if you select them. Applixware
spreadsheets lose this attribute when
exported to Excel.
24. Protected or Locked cells are
supported. Cells locked in Excel prevent
editing or deleting the cell's contents
and are enabled after protecting the
sheet. Applixware protects cells in the
same way. When Applixware converts a
spreadsheet to or from Excel, Applixware
protected cells and Excel locked cells
are maintained.
25. Password-protected files cannot be
imported. Attempting to import password-
protected files brings up the following
alert: "This file is protected and
encrypted. Can not read." Resave your
file without password protection and
reimport it.
26. Arrays are not supported as
arguments within formulas (array formulas
ARE supported). In 4.3.7 and 4.4 these
are imported with the following format: {
Array Formula (unimportable) }. They are
NOT detected by our interactive process
(Unsupported Functions and Import
Problems dialogs). Instead you may see
"Trouble with cell: A:B3" at the end of
your Spreadsheet for each occurrence.

27. Character formatting is not
supported in Applixware. The format of
the initial cell contents is applied to
the entire cell.
28. Hyperlinks are not supported.
Applixware loses the hyperlink but
maintains the actual text and (usual)
blue styling.
29. Per sheet formatting is not
supported. Applixware formats all sheets
based on the active sheet (last sheet
viewed when saved).
30. Links are supported when importing
Excel files by converting the actual
linked material to a graphic object and
embedding the picture in the Applixware
Spreadsheet. Links are not exported, they
are ignored. In 4.41 Applixware will
output a comment in the Excel file for
all Applixware objects.
31. Adjust to: in Excel's Page Setup is
not supported in Applixware. Typically
one could adjust their *.xls file to
print on one page which when imported to
Applixware can not be supported. Instead
use Excel's Fit to: field which is
supported and can preserve printing your
Spreadsheets on the specified number of
pages.
32. View Zoom settings are converted
from the active Excel sheet in 4.41,
except in rare cases when zoom is less
than 20% in Excel. These convert to a 20%
zoom.
33. Each of Applixware's ten database
functions Dxxx has a corresponding
function XDxxx which calculates in the
same manner as the functions in Excel.
Importing the Excel database functions
converts them to the corresponding
Applixware XDxxx functions. Exporting
XDxxx functions converts them to the
corresponding Excel database functions.
Applixware Dxxx database functions are
not supported in Excel and instead of
exporting a function, a message
indicating this will be exported. To
ensure compatibility when exporting from
Applixware to Excel use the XDxxx
functions.
Excel 97/2000
1.Notes are now called Comments in Excel
97/2000, and are still ignored by our
imports (81869).
2.There is currently NO support for
exporting to Excel 97/2000 (or Excel 7.0)
because Applixware supports export of 5.0
Excel files. The features available in
5.0 are not different from later
versions. Excel 7.0 and 97/2000 are both
capable of opening 5.0 files.
3. Double byte characters (Unicode) that
have the high eight bits set do not map
into the standard 256 character set
(Excel 97/2000 adds an extended range of
characters, unicode, for international
support) and therefore can not be
converted to Applix's ISO Latin-1 set (or
others based on 256 characters). In 4.4
Applixware substitutes a question mark
(?) for Unicode characters with the high
bits set. If you see question marks in
your imported files, try resaving Excel
97/2000 files in earlier the formats 5.0
or 7.0 (95) which do not support Unicode.

4. Extra sheets may be imported into
Applixware from Excel macros which are
not directly available in Excel.
Powerpoint 97/2000
1. Powerpoint documents created in versions
prior to 97/2000 cannot be imported.
2. Although Presents allows you to have
multiple text boxes in a header or a
footer, Powerpoint does not. When
exporting a Presents document to
Powerpoint, only the first text box
header (or footer) is exported. To keep
multiple text boxes, change your Presents
document so it uses only one text box in
the header (or footer) and include other
text boxes in the master slide.
Known Issues
· The Desktop icon for Data will not appear
after installation. You can download the
icon from SmartBeak.com
(
http://www.smartbeak.com). Instructions
can be found by searching for this item

· You cannot insert the first row of a
table in Data. (5004358)
· You cannot import files if you start
Applixware in the following manner:
./applix -display [machine]:0.0 The
import will return the following error:
Unknown Error. To avoid this error, set
your display prior to starting

· In the Applixware Classic interface,
radio button spacing is inaccurate when
using a small system font. The system
font can be changed by selecting * -->
Applixware Preferences and clicking the
Select alternate system override font

· PostgreSQL is not supported in Applixware
5.0. (5002480)
· The Shift-Click mechanism in list boxes
does not work correctly. For example, if
you select items 2, 3, and 4 from a list
box and Shift-Click item 7, only items 4
through 7 will be selected. This is an

· The Gallium font server is not supported
in this release on Linux DEC Alpha. For
a workaround, see
http://www.users.fast.net/~rodsmith/font-

alternative TrueType font server.

· Mail will download incorrectly from a POP
server if the "From: " field in the
message header is followed by a Tab
rather than a space.
· Euro symbols will not be mapped properly
in Oracle 8 without a patch, which is
available directly from Oracle.
· You must use the NLS_LANG database
environment variable to map 8-bit
characters for both elforacl and elfodbc.
It is in the form,
NLS_LANG=language_territory.charset.
This variable can be set in the axnet.cnf
file as follows:
setenvFor elforacl NLS_LANG=.WE8ISO8859P1
setenvFor elfodbc NLS_LANG=.WE8ISO8859P1
To use this environment variable, you
must have Oracle 8 client software
installed.
· The YEARABS function may not display
properly in Spreadsheets. Make certain
that the numeric style of the cell
containing the function is set to
something other than date.
· When running the RPM-based Applixware
4.42 for Linux installation on a RedHat
6.0 system, the following error is thrown
and the installation does not start:
rpm: only one of -prefix or -relocate may
be used
RedHat is aware of this problem and will
provide a fix for users. The latest
version of rpm can be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/rpm-3.0.x
· The Microsoft Office 97 filters may fail
to execute if you start Applixware from a
shell window other than a C shell (csh).

data query file that has been saved with
data will result in the following error:
"tab: Dialog not created or already
dismissed." The file cannot be opened
from the Directory Displayer. Use the
Data application to open the file

· With large Presents presentations (with
approximately 80 or more slides), you
will only be able to view the first 23
slides. (4457280)
· The program axhostid incorrectly displays
the current date and time instead of the
date and time axhostid was run. (4457243)
· You cannot use BLOBs in Sybase ASE
versions 11 (and higher), as it does not
support elfodbc. (4456501)
· Data does not support the new Oracle 8
data type, Blob (which supercedes the
Long data type), through the drivers we
provide. However, you can obtain third-
party drivers that will support this data
type. (4456618)
· When using the Long data type for BLOBs
in an Oracle 8 table, only data
previously saved in Applixware format,
ASCII text, or HTML text can be inserted
into a row or edited. (4456656)
· When using the Long raw data type for
BLOBs in an Oracle 8 table, Data will not
accept Applixware-formatted files, ASCII
files, or HTML files into the BLOB.

· In Oracle 8 tables that have either the
Long or Long raw data type, you cannot
save a BLOB to an external file in edit
